Maxine Simmons

Chief Executive, ICPbio

Maxine Simmons is Chief Executive of one of New Zealand's pioneering biotech companies, ICPbio Limited, which provides innovative technical solutions for the pharmaceutical, dairy, food processing and animal reproduction industries world-wide.

She began the company nearly 20 years ago, with co-director Rosemary Sharpin. Their contribution to the growth of the biotechnology sector was recognised in 2000 by the New Zealand Biotechnology Association's 'New Zealand Distinguished Biotechnologist' Award.

Maxine graduated from the University of Auckland with a BSc (Biochemistry) and an MSc with first class honours in Pathology. As a research scientist with the Auckland School of Medicine and the Auckland Regional Blood Transfusion Services, she developed new techniques for tissue typing, as well as carrying out research into rheumatoid arthritis.

She is a member of the NZ Institute of Directors, the NZ Biotechnology Association and BIOTENZ a collaboration of exporting biotechnology companies. Her extensive experience in business and scientific circles is highly valued in the New Zealand science and technology business sector.

Maxine has been a member of the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology Advisory Committee since 1984 and a director of the Foundation Board since 1999. Maxine is also a founding Board member of the government's new business initiative, Industry New Zealand.
