Tahu Potiki

Tahu Potiki is Chief Executive Officer of Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu. In his current role Tahu is responsible for the effective and strategic management of the organisation.

Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu was established by the Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu Act 1996 and head office is based in central Christchurch. The mission of Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu is to prudently manage the tribe's collective assets and other taonga for the maximum benefit of this and future generations.

In the 2000/01 financial year, the value of Ngai Tahu assets increased to $375 million and its equity increased from $256 million to $273.3 million.

All profits are reinvested or used to fund development programmes in areas such as health, education, housing, economic security, culture and identity for tribal members.

Prior to his current role, Tahu was Kaiarahi at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology. This role is positioned within the Executive Team. Primarily the role is intended to develop the Polytechnic's responsiveness to Maori throughout the institution and to consolidate important iwi and community relationships.

Tahu has had considerable experience working in both social and educational environments.

Tahu was Chairman of the Board of Ngai Tahu Development Corporation until accepting his present position. He currently serves on the Board of He Oranga Pounamu and has also served as a Board member of both the West Coast and Canterbury District Health Boards.

Tahu has partially completed a Masters of Consumer and Applied Sciences through the University of Otago.

He is a fluent speaker of Te Reo Maori and has been published widely in both English and Mäori.
